Steve McQueen CBE

Steve McQueen has been appointed a CBE in the New Year Honours List (title link). No, not the great Hollywood actor, but that Turner Prize winner much loved by the Brit. Anti-art Establishment. He represented Britain at the 2009 Venice Biennale with his film Giardini. It would be easy to dismiss him as just another Turner winner, but he also gained the Caméra d'Or at Cannes for his debut feature film Hunger (2008). CLICK to see a Guardian slide show from 2008 of his work. This year he exhibited Queen and Country, which opened his campaign to have British soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq commemorated on postage stamps. The attractive young lady above is Keisha Meade, the sister of Fusilier Donal Meade of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers who died in 2005 aged 20. She stands next to her brother's image on McQueen's stamps at the National Portrait Gallery.

Why have you placed a random picture of a black person next to this piece of art. Surely it would be more appropriate to place a picture of Steve McQueen?

Why have you not placed a picture of Steve McQueen next to his piece? Surely as an organisation you are aware of what he looks like?

She isn't random. She's the sister of a soldier who died in Iraq and she's standing next to his image at McQueen's exhibition. He contacted the families of those whose images he intended to use. Read my blog.

I rarely post photos of artists. It's their work that counts, not what they look like. And yes I do know what McQueen looks like, and Keisha Meade is much prettier!

Anyone brave enough to go to Afghanistan should get a CBE before an artist, regardless of the rights and wrongs of the political situation.

Good point. However, a CBE isn't a military award. It goes to people who have served their community. I assume that all military personel who serve in Afghanistan will gain a campaign ribbon, so that their service there is recognized by other members of the military forces. Military medals are awarded for valour "above and beyond the call of duty".

My guess is that McQueen was given his CBE for campaigning on behalf of the families of those soldiers who died in Iraq, not for going to Iraq as a war artist, which was a few years ago.

She is really pretty. The picture of her is quite poignant.

Hi, Guillaume

That's what I thought. Glad you agree with me. Plus she is black, as is the artist. So she represents him in a way too. She seemed the perfect choice.
